The Power Game (Meg and Tom Keneally)

The Power Game

Book 3 Monsarrat Series

by Meg and Tom Keneally

Following on from reading the first book, because I didn't get the second book, I was keen to follow the adventures of Monsarrat once more.
This time he is sent to Van Diemen's Land to a small island to investigate a murder.
His housekeeper, Mrs Hannah Mulrooney, is able to come with him, mainly as he values her way of looking at things. her perspective gives him a different insight into the problems and happenings in this harsh and strongly male community.
We learn a lot more about Mrs Mulrooney as she is given the opportunity to work for the Captain's strong-minded wife. She learns about aspects of the case and thus is able to assist Monsarrat to solve the question of whodunnit.
Many coils unwind as intertwined stories cause confusion and mayhem for Monsarrat and Mulrooney. As usual, the Captain doesn't see things the way Monsarrat does, so there is lots of under the bench activity to reach a conclusion in the time required.
Now to borrow the second book from the library as my bookseller hasn't been able to get me a copy yet.
