Having watched a jovial Tom Keneally and his daughter, Margaret
on an ABC breakfast television show, I decided I should read the
first book of their planned series.
Set in the early convict era of Australia, this book has as its major
theme justice and privilege. We meet the main character, Monsarrat,
who is a likable, self-educated man of English lower class origin.
Banished to Port Macquarie for his audacity to fraudently pass
himself off as a barrister, despite being a fine student and having
studied law, he is always walking a fine line as a clerk for the major.
The harshness of the convict system is ever-present but Monsarrat
navigates the risks he takes to ensure truth wins out. What is the curse?
